What is Web 2.0?

What is Web 2.0? It’s a hard thing to pinpoint, nail down or even really define because it is evolving so much, but I ask the question with the intent to get some commentary from everyone. How would you describe it?

On the subject of Web 2.0 . . . I had lunch last week with Phil Burns, COO of Provo Labs, and we talked a lot about this topic. The conversation was invaluable because I learned a ton from Phil and he told me he took my advice about renaming a project he is working on. Very cool.

The point is, our lunch meeting created a lot of wealth for the both of us. It’s kind of like the “lovecat” concept if you will, but my favorite description of it goes like this “For the earth is full, and there is enough and to spare. The two-hour conversation Phil and I had over chips, queso and about five sodas a piece at Chili’s felt exactly like this. Phil shared. I shared, and we are both wealthier for it.

Exchange creates wealth.

That being said. How would you describe Web 2.0?

I’ve been working on an awesome definition for Web 2.0 but I’m hesitant to mention it here because I’ll probably copyright it, sell it, and create REAL wealth.

That a kid.

I don’t have it nailed down in my mind, but like I told Phil, I think what makes Web 2.0 different is humans. It seems like when the Internet came along, everyone kept trying to find all these ways to let computers do everything.

Web 2.0 seems to take into account the fact that relevancy requires humans. Tagging is a perfect example of this. So, when someone says “I do Web 2.0″ stuff, what is it that they envision being Web 2.0. I really think it’s Web services, apps, whatever it may be that mix the magic of technology with the reality of human decision making.

Check out my friend John’s post on Web2.0verboard.

I agree with him - a lot of web 2.0 is hype. However, most of my designs as of late at work (state govt. apps) have all had web 2.0-esque designs.. ya know, gradients, big letters, rounded corners, AJAX, and all that jazz.

I just hope the bubble doesn’t burst…
