The thing about life is it’s full of suprises. Five years ago today I was driving home from Boise, Idaho with my friend Adam Eshenroder in his Toyota Tacoma when I fell asleep at the wheel. We we’re traveling at about 70 mph and we were in he middle of nowhere. A few minutes later we we’re lying upside down in the median after rolling five times. I was out cold. Knocked out from a hit to the head. Luckily, Adam was conscious because my arm was stuck between the truck and the ground. Once I came to and realized what was happening I began yelling for help while frantically trying to extract my arm.
I’m Allergic to Boards and Tape
A few moments later Adam had flagged down help and they together pulled me from the car, which I don’t remember because I had dosed off again from the smack to my head. The paramedics tried to put Adam on a back board and tape his head and neck down, but he refused. They asked him if was allergic to anything and he told them “Boards and tape.” He prevailed. Joker.
Somehow, Adam walked away from the wreck in good shape. I walked out of the hospital in banged-up shape, but I walked away nevertheless. Somehow, we we’re both in pretty good shape.
Thoughts about life and death
I don’t know that I will ever forget this experience. It’s one of those things about about life. Likewise, I don’t think I will ever forget watching an entire mountain of snow fall off a mountain minutes after I was on the hill myself. It’s the thing about life. A brush with death reminds you how easily life can be gone.
Maybe Abraham Lincoln was right when he said “And in the end, it’s not the years in your life that count. It’s the life in your years.” I think he is right, so I figure I should add a little more “life” in my years. The Mrs. and I are expecting a baby.

Excellent post and congrats on the kid! I’m glad you both made it our of that wreck - I consider you and “young” Adam to be good friends!
Congrats, Russellmania.
Congrats!
I have some good friends who were in a similarly serious car accident a couple years ago. The damage was very extensive to all four in the car, but they’ve all made it, and one of the couples is also expecting a baby! Glad to see you two made it out okay.
Ugh. Kids are so not worth it.
TOTALLY kidding! Congrats!
Congrats Russ, and well written post.
I’m glad that Adam has such a ripped back that he can totally pull trucks off of your arm. And I can totally see the A-Bomb saying “I’m allergic to boards and tape”
