Newt Gingrich has come out and stated that he was having an affair during the time he was leading the charge against Bill Clinton and the Monica Lewinsky affair. Ironically, there is talk about him becoming a candidate for president.

“There are times that I have fallen short of my own standards. There’s certainly times when I’ve fallen short of God’s standards,” he told CNN. Whatever . . .

My gut tells me that part of the reason he is doing this is because he planning an official run for the Whitehouse. I have a hard time seeing why someone would come out and randomly admit something like this when they have dodged it for years.

Only the Penitent Shall Pass
There seems to be this odd day of reckoning that all candidates go through when they consider a run for the Whitehouse, and the sooner they can get the dirt on the table, the sooner they can squash the news potential of it. Newt Gingrich appears to be doing this exact thing by divulging his own dirt while he isn’t a candidate. It won’t be news by the time he makes an announcement to run.

When to divulge the dirt?
Have you ever seen The West Wing? You can learn a ton about PR strategy from this show, and one of the things you learn is that Friday is the day they divulge all of the bad news. Save up all of the bad news and dump it all on the media on one day, Friday. They won’t cover it all, and it’s not news by Monday.

Gingrich lucked out even more in this situation because the FBI admitted to misuse of its power under the Patriot Act and it’s monopolizing the headlines.
