Exploring the Art & Science of Marketing
SEO PR?
Are the lines starting to blur between search engine marketers and public relations practitioners?
- Utah PR people are talking about keyword-stuffed press releases.
- SEO firms are offering online public relations and press release optimization services . . . (SEO.com)
- SEO firms are offering copywriting services.
- PR firms are pushing “new media,” blogs, podcasts, Diggs, etc….
- Internet marketers are pushing the “seo press release.” (Newspapergrl)
- PR firms are tracking the number of hits to a news story/press release online . . .
- SEM firms are doing ad buys (it’s called pay-per-click).
- Both parties are pitching stories to journalists (and citizen journalists).
- Both are employing “new media” in the form of blogs.
and on, and on….

Russ,
Yes, it seems the lines are blurring. Where they are not, they should. In my experience PR firms are often behind the curve on new media. But their clients want them to do both.
I believe most press releases should have two versions – one for the web site and print and one for search engines (with keywords).
Who is doing this well in Utah?

Hey Russ, I’ve read your blog for awhile now, and since I work at seo.com, I can tell you, I think PR agencies need to do more with online activities. We just got a deal with a PR firm in New York, who signed a 20K$ per month deal with a company that wanted just seo. And the pr firm didn’t offer it, so what did they do? They contacted us and are white labeling our service. The lines are blurring from an seo point of view, but PR firms are way too late in catching up to the online trend of everything. It might be a sinking ship for some traditional pr firms.

I couldn’t agree more Adam. I couldn’t agree more. I have a background in PR, but I’ve always fancied myself as more of an online PR guy since I studied digital media before I finished with PR.

Question: Did you just join our seo forums a little while ago? And I think I swapped stumblies with you too. I see all of the links I stumbled in your sidebar there. No hiding from me

Oh, and you should definitely link to our blog at seo.com/blog, and join the contest we just started with Facebook. I actually had the idea, not sure if it’s been done before.

Very good idea for a contest.

PR firms are behind the curve. So are ad agencies in Utah. There’s been a growing trend toward online media. 80% of the major broadcast news is taken from online sources these days. Newspapers are dying. Even local tv news is not what it once was. That’s why I didn’t like working at the ad firm I was. They were stuck in traditional marketing. I started my own public relations business this summer, mainly focusing on getting news to the online sources like Google News and Yahoo Buzz.
