Presidential politics: a very misleading headline in the Deseret News

This misleading headline is found in the Deseret News of all places. Unfortunately for Mitt Romney it ran via the Associated Press.

Headline
Huckabee takes big lead in Iowa GOP race, Romney 14 percent to Huckabee’s 47 percent

When you read the details you find it’s a blatant distortion of the actual story.

The Truth
Among GOP evangelicals in the new poll, Huckabee leads Romney by 47 percent to 14 percent”

If you read on further you learn that they surveyed 275 people, which means this 47/14 number represents a very small number of people because it refers to whatever number of people identified themselves as “GOP Evangelicals.” The unfortunate thing is, you’ll start to see this happen more and more with all the candidates . . .

Huckbee’s surge will be short lived. The guy is a southern baptist preacher and the media will have a hay day digging up extreme right-wing stuff on this guy. Its already started:

Huckabee is the Howard Dean of the GOP.

I agree with Chris. I don’t know much about Huckabee, but based on what I’ve heard I think once the scrutiny starts coming on strong he’ll be dropping fast in the polls and I don’t think he stands a chance in the actual primary. I think it’s a momentary blip and we’ll see either Giuliani or Romney win in Iowa, with Huckabee in somewhere in the 3rd to 5th range, or lower if he emits a Dean-like scream on camera in the next few weeks. Aaaaaaahhhhhhhhhh!!!

On the other hand, it would be kind of fun to have him in the white house if for no other reason than his name. President Huckabee? Sounds like the head of the Fraternal Organization of Carnival Workers or something.
