Fear and Creativity

I am often a critic of Seth Godin (probably because I didn’t like Purple Cow’s redundancy) but I have to say that I like this comment if his.

The enemy of creativity is fear” – Seth Godin

PocketProfessor

We picked up a new client recently called PocketProfessor. They make GameBoy cartridges that offer educational content, essentially a GameBoy game that’s not a game. They also have a Palm OS version.

The cool part is the program has more than 16,000 pages of content, including animations, multimedia, etc… You can even do calculations.

Dead Deer

There was a dead deer on my front lawn this morning. What a suprise that was.

White House Press Briefing

White House press secretary Scott McClellan has got to have one of the toughest media relations jobs in America. I heard parts of his press briefing on the radio this morning, and I couldn’t help but chuckle at his answer. He’s definitely being obvious about his message.

Question: Explain why it’s so difficult to find him [Osama bin Laden], just for the American public who may say, we’re so technologically advanced, the greatest army in the world, but we can’t find him –

MR. McCLELLAN: Well, I think you have to look at the nature of the enemy that we face, and the nature of the war that we’re engaged in. This is a war on terrorism. It’s broader than any one person . . . blah, blah, blah . . .

Question: Ideological war, or not, why is it so hard to find him?

MR. McCLELLAN: He is someone who is clearly on the run and has been hiding, and we will continue to pursue him and bring him to justice.

No clear answer. He’s been trained for this. On the other hand, the media can be quite manipulative. Read, and you will see what I mean. [ White House Press Briefing ]

PRSA on Blogging

I just returned from a PRSA luncheon about blogging podcasting. Informative? Sort of. Interesting? Sort of.

Blogging is one of those things that I think is more a buzz word than anything. Most blogs that are popular are more like traditional media outlets and others are well . . . just websites. Don’t get me wrong, I love blogs. Why? Because the people who run them are more honest about their feelings and much more entertaining in their writing than a Newsweek or a Time Magazine.

Podcasts – These are basically mp3 files you can download from the Internet. Wow! Okay, podcasts are a little different. An mp3 basically becomes a podcast when people can have it automatically downloaded to their computer. Wah la. That’s a podcast. The most successful podcasts are more like mp3 versions of radio programs. They have structure. So, their you have it. My two cents on podcasting and blogging.

Warren B buys BusinessWire

Warren Buffet’s firm Birkshire Hathaway has purchased privately held BusinessWire. Purchased what?

BusinessWire is a tool used by PR firms to distribute news releases and photos to the media. A few weeks ago, we got wind that BusinessWire’s big competitor PR Newswire fired something like 30 percent of its staff. PR Newswire is a subsidiary of United Business Media of London, which also owns CMP, a publisher of highly focused vertical trade publications like Forestry and British Timber and International Food Ingredients.

Our high tech PR agency has used both services, and I personally prefer BusinessWire for its ease of use. Although, PR Newswire does have a better Christmas party.

The best intros . . .

The best intros come from corporate finance attorneys, college professors, and the CEOs of companies in our portfolio. Intros from these parties will usually result in at least a meeting.

– Guy Kawasaki

He’s talking about intros to new companies in which he might invest.
