I know everyone has already heard about Warren Buffet, but I read a quote this morning that made me think about what Buffet is doing with his money.
” . . . when you have more than you can take care of yourselves. I say, hand it over and let your neighbors take care of it for you.” - Brigham Young.

Blogging via BlackBerry?
June 30th, 2006 — Business
Supposedly, I’m now set up to be able to file posts and stories on DavidPolitis.com via my BlackBerry.
It’s not going to be as easy or robust as doing it from a computer, but if I’m on the road and want to write/file something right away, who cares?
So . . . let’s see how it works.

HHE Signs Deal with Sony BMG
June 29th, 2006 — Blog, Business, Media Relations, Public Relations, Strategic Marketing, Utah Public Relations, Web 2.0, del.icio.us
I have to give a shout out to a client of mine for landing a deal with Sony BMG Music Entertainment to distribute some of the music giant’s music videos through it’s download store Zvue.com (”z-view”). They have access to artists from more than 20 labels! That means we have access to 20 labels!
Personally, I like that they have taken a different approach from the “it only plays on an iPod” strategy. If you buy a video from HHE, you can pretty much bet it will play on your portable media player or computer. And the Sony BMG deal is just a small part of it all. They cut deals with CBC, eMusic, Anime Network and a host of others in the past few months.
On a tangential sidenote . . . the CTO of HandHeld Entertainment is a guy by the name of Carl Page (no relation to me), but he just happens to be closely related to Google co-founder Larry Page. And it just so happens that while I was at CES 2006 this year, Carl brought Larry to the HandHeld Entertainment booth at the very time that I was in the can . . . away from the trade show flor. So, I missed meeting Larry Page because I had too much to drink that morning. I would have told him thanks because he’s created some amazing tools that have given me access to information in a whole new way. Thanks Larry Page!
Okay, off the tangent. Way to go HandHeld Entertainment team on the Sony BMG deal.
What is Web 2.0?
June 28th, 2006 — Business, Pondering, Quotable, Religion, Utah Public Relations Agency, Web 2.0, del.icio.us
What is Web 2.0? It’s a hard thing to pinpoint, nail down or even really define because it is evolving so much, but I ask the question with the intent to get some commentary from everyone. How would you describe it?
On the subject of Web 2.0 . . . I had lunch last week with Phil Burns, COO of Provo Labs, and we talked a lot about this topic. The conversation was invaluable because I learned a ton from Phil and he told me he took my advice about renaming a project he is working on. Very cool.
The point is, our lunch meeting created a lot of wealth for the both of us. It’s kind of like the “lovecat” concept if you will, but my favorite description of it goes like this “For the earth is full, and there is enough and to spare. The two-hour conversation Phil and I had over chips, queso and about five sodas a piece at Chili’s felt exactly like this. Phil shared. I shared, and we are both wealthier for it.
Exchange creates wealth.
That being said. How would you describe Web 2.0?

If you haven’t heard, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer will be coming to Utah in October to speak at Utah Technology Council Hall of Fame dinner.
“Ballmer has managed the day-to-day operations at Microsoft since becoming president in 1998 and then CEO in 2000. Earlier this month, Gates revealed that he would retire from his role as chief software architect in 2008.”

StockCloud - a press release mashup
June 24th, 2006 — Business, Business Writing, Investor Relations, Media Relations, Public Relations, RSS, Utah Public Relations, Web 2.0, del.icio.us
I was browsing around online today when I came across an interesting mashup called Stock Cloud.
The creators themselves say “We’ve been a bit less then successful extracting business partnership data but we have collected a fair amount of interesting data to date and as such I felt motivated to share it with the world … thus Stock Cloud was born.”
From what I can tell, Stock Cloud only tracks publicly traded companies, so its abilities are limited, but the idea is still neat. What I find even more interesting is that the companies with the biggest clouds are no-namers.
What happens, and it happens a lot, is that you get small time companies that do a reverse merger where they essentially merge with a defunct company that was once public. It’s much cheaper to do it this way. Then, they try to pump the stock by putting out numerous and meaningless press releases every week in order to try and get the stock price to go up. It’s a pretty dishonest investor relations strategy.
So, if anything, Stock Cloud potentially does a great job of identifying companies that are known as “pumpers and dumpers.” Once they get the price up, they dump the stock, and people lose out. If you want to learn more IR strategy from a guy who runs one of the most experienced investor relations firms in Utah, read David Politis’ blog. The guy knows what he’s talking about in this area.
(David Politis is my employer, BUT I haven’t met another person in Utah who understands IR like he does).
