PRSA on Blogging

I just returned from a PRSA luncheon about blogging podcasting. Informative? Sort of. Interesting? Sort of.

Blogging is one of those things that I think is more a buzz word than anything. Most blogs that are popular are more like traditional media outlets and others are well . . . just websites. Don’t get me wrong, I love blogs. Why? Because the people who run them are more honest about their feelings and much more entertaining in their writing than a Newsweek or a Time Magazine.

Podcasts – These are basically mp3 files you can download from the Internet. Wow! Okay, podcasts are a little different. An mp3 basically becomes a podcast when people can have it automatically downloaded to their computer. Wah la. That’s a podcast. The most successful podcasts are more like mp3 versions of radio programs. They have structure. So, their you have it. My two cents on podcasting and blogging.

Warren B buys BusinessWire

Warren Buffet’s firm Birkshire Hathaway has purchased privately held BusinessWire. Purchased what?

BusinessWire is a tool used by PR firms to distribute news releases and photos to the media. A few weeks ago, we got wind that BusinessWire’s big competitor PR Newswire fired something like 30 percent of its staff. PR Newswire is a subsidiary of United Business Media of London, which also owns CMP, a publisher of highly focused vertical trade publications like Forestry and British Timber and International Food Ingredients.

Our high tech PR agency has used both services, and I personally prefer BusinessWire for its ease of use. Although, PR Newswire does have a better Christmas party.

The best intros . . .

The best intros come from corporate finance attorneys, college professors, and the CEOs of companies in our portfolio. Intros from these parties will usually result in at least a meeting.

– Guy Kawasaki

He’s talking about intros to new companies in which he might invest.

When people screw up . . .

“When people screw up, give them a second chance” – Richard Branson, CEO of Virgin.

Guys like this don’t become billionaires by luck. Here’s another.

“Never, ever forget that you are a servant” – David Neeleman, CEO of JetBlue

Guys like this don’t start an airline from the ground up by luck either.

Miller’s Move – Brokeback dilemma part 3

My boss was asked to comment (from a PR consultant standpoint) on what he thought about Larry H. Miller pulling Brokeback Mountain from his theater.

Miller continues to remain silent about the reasons behind the decision.

But one public relations professional, Politis Communications’ president David Politis, doubts that Miller’s decision was a calculated move.

“I believe it was the result of a spur of the moment decision, a passionate reaction that came about after he learned what the movie was about,” Politis said. “We’ve seen him make split-second decisions in the past when things have upset him.”

Bloggo mojo

I have been working all day on putting together a blog about technology in Utah. It’s not quite ready, but the plan is to offer a little more news than the local emails that go around . . . cough . . . Connect . . . cough . . . DigitalIQ.

Let me know what you think. Feel free to contribute.
